Five towns, and nothing outside them

Jupiter Boater covers Jupiter, Tequesta, Juno Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, North Palm Beach. That is the entire directory, on purpose.

The problem this is fixing

Search for a marine mechanic in Jupiter and you get results from Port St. Lucie, Boynton Beach, and Fort Lauderdale. Those are real businesses, and several of them are excellent, but they are a forty minute drive from your slip on a good day. National marketplaces have every incentive to widen the radius until the page looks full. The result is a directory that is technically about Jupiter and practically about South Florida.

Meanwhile the two-truck outfit that has been washing boats on the Loxahatchee for nine years is nowhere to be found, because nobody has ever asked them to sign up.

What we do differently

Two things, and only two. The geography is genuinely restricted, so a business that does not work in these five towns does not get listed however much it would like to be. And the checks arepublished in full, applied to everyone the same way, and impossible to buy.

There are no star ratings here. Ratings on directories are easy to farm and hard to audit. Registration, insurance, licence numbers, and two customers who confirm the work happened are either true or they are not. It is a lower ceiling than reviews and a much higher floor.

How this is paid for

A basic listing is free and stays free, because a directory nobody is listed in is not useful to anybody. Businesses can pay between$49 and $149 a month for a featured listing, which buys placement at the top of a category page and the Featured label. It buys nothing else. In particular it does not buy a verification badge, and it does not change the order of the listings underneath it.

There is no booking fee and no cut of any job. If you find somebody here and hire them, that is between the two of you.

What is coming

Services first, because that is where the gap was widest. Charters next, since it is a small and well defined field locally. Rentals after that, once there is enough traffic to be worth an operator's time. Dealers stay a simple reference list rather than an inventory search, because Boat Trader already does that well and doing it worse would help nobody.
