What licenses does a charter captain actually need in Florida?
Two things. A USCG license, either an OUPV for up to six paying passengers or a Master license for more, and a separate FWC charter captain or charter boat license. A captain who only mentions the USCG credential is missing half of it.
Do I need my own fishing license on a charter?
No. A licensed charter operation covers its passengers, which is one of the practical reasons the FWC license matters. If a captain tells you to buy your own license for a paid trip, ask why.
What runs when out of Jupiter Inlet?
Sailfish peak in the cooler months, roughly December through March. Kingfish and cobia move through in spring. Mahi and tuna are a warm-season run offshore, and snapper and grouper fish through much of the year subject to open seasons.
Can the Jupiter Inlet get too rough to run?
Yes, and it is one of the trickier inlets on this coast. On a hard outgoing tide against an east wind it stands up fast. A local captain will move you inshore or reschedule rather than push it, and that judgment is most of what you are paying for.
